Silver Band blown away by donation from The Wessex Group

Musicians from the Shaftesbury Town Silver Band can trumpet news of their ensemble even further thanks to a donation of 50 musical scores from The Wessex Group.

The company, based in the North Dorset town, is celebrating its half century this year and each month is giving “50 somethings” to a good cause or charity.

It has provided sheet music for the musicians who play at community engagements and public events throughout the year.

Anderson Group take part in bike ride for the National Autistic Society

On Friday 11 October, thirteen representatives of The Anderson Group took part in a charity bike ride to raise money for The National Autistic Society, the 2013 beneficiary of The Anderson Foundation.

During the gruelling ride, each of the cyclists would’ve burned off around 8,000 calories each (over 100,000 between them!). The Anderson Group have currently raised in excess of £5,000 for the charity and are looking to increase this with post event team donations from suppliers over the next couple of weeks.

Fareham Construction Co appoints new contracts manager

Fareham based Amiri Construction has appointed Simon Powell from Portsmouth as their new Contracts Manager. Simon joins the £17 million turnover company with over 25 years of experience of building and construction, having started as the 3rd generation member of W. S Powell, the Portsmouth builders founded by his grandfather William Powell in 1947.

He worked with William and his father Glyn as an estimator and surveyor before moving on to work for other major construction companies.

2013 Young Builder of the Year winners announced

Youthbuild UK has announced that Kimberley Beagan of Novus Solutions, Glasgow is the 2013 Young Builder of the Year and the first-ever Scottish winner of the annual award. 

The UK-wide awards, now in their fourteenth year, celebrate the achievements of young people who have overcome personal barriers to train and work for the construction industry. The awards ceremony was held at the House of Commons and the winners were presented with a trophy, framed certificate, a cheque, and tools vouchers.

National contractor Bullock has announced the appointment of Ian Burnett to the role of Chief Executive Officer.

Ian joins the business having acted as an independent consultant to the organisation’s Board for the last 6 months.

Lanes engineers play "vital role" in rescuing drain dog Dottie

Firefighters have praised Lanes Group engineers for playing a vital role in rescuing a little dog called Dottie from more than 100 feet down a drain in a public park.

The six-year-old Chihuahua-Jack Russell cross is believed to have dashed after a mouse or rat when she disappeared down the storm drain in Sunny Hill Park, Hendon, North London.

When the fire service realised they could not find Dottie, they put an urgent call through to Thames Water who requested engineers from Lanes Group, its wastewater contractors, to attend.

Dr Miles Watkins appointed as BRE Business Development Director

Dr Miles Watkins has joined BRE to take up the key new position of Group Business Development Director. Miles will lead on formulating commercial strategies for the organisation that will further strengthen its presence in the UK and in its core overseas markets.

A professional environmentalist with an outstanding career, Dr Watkins spent 17 years at Aggregate Industries before joining BRE. His final role was as Director of Sustainable Construction, where his responsibilities included marketing, safety, innovation and external and internal communications. In his new role, his focus will be on enhancing ways of supporting customers, with an emphasis on meeting their needs and adding further value across all services.

Heckmondwike carpet company helps the homeless reach for the stars

West Yorkshire-based Heckmondwike FB has helped to enrich the lives of homeless people in East London, by supplying carpet tiles to Cardboard Citizens, a homelessness project supported by Oscar award-winning actress Kate Winslet.

As the UK’s leading manufacturer of fibre bonded carpet and tiles, Heckmondwike FB responded to a request from CRASH, the construction and property industry's homelessness charity, to provide the floorcovering for a new purpose-built workshop and rehearsal space for homeless people in Tower Hamlets, East London.  Heckmondwike FB supplied 130m2 of Broadrib carpet tiles for the project, which will provide a hard-wearing solution for the busy office and consultation areas in the facility.

HIGHWAYS maintenance and civil engineering contractor, JPCS, has bolstered its senior management team with the appointment of highways expert Rosie Shanks.

Rosie joins JPCS as commercial and business development director and brings more than 20 years’ experience in the highways and local authority sector.

Amiri Construction promotes new Director

Fareham based Amiri Construction has promoted their Construction Manager Neil Cole join founders Grahame Pettit and Kevin Lendon as a Director of the £15 million turnover business that employs a team of 24.

Neil, 39 from Chichester, joined the company soon after its launch in 2005, and had worked with the Directors previously at Benson Construction in Botley for 8 years as Contracts Manager and with Brighton based Barnes and Elliott at the start of his career.

Gold award for Sheffield Hallam student architect

A budding architect at Sheffield Hallam University has scooped a top award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Suki Sehmbi, 21, was given the Gold Prize in the undergraduate category of RIBA Yorkshire's Student Awards 2013 for his design that sought to improve the economy, environment and architecture in the seaside town of Whitby.
