NHBC announce appointment of Ian Craston

NHBC has today announced the appointment of Ian Craston, Group Investments Director at RSA Insurance Group, as a non-executive Director of its Board.

Ian will also chair NHBC’s Investment Committee which oversees the UK’s leading new home warranty and insurance provider’s portfolio of investments.

ISG appoints Northern Regional Managing Director

ISG has announced the appointment of Danny Murray as Northern regional managing director for its UK Construction business.

Based in the company’s Manchester office, Danny brings over 30 years’ construction industry experience to the business over a career that encompasses senior roles with national main contractor organisations. Most recently, as a national operations director, Danny was responsible for the delivery of projects valued at £625 million, with core expertise in the education, healthcare, commercial office, defence, R&D and retail sectors.

BRE appoints new Chief Scientist and Engineer

Building science centre BRE appoints University College London Professor of Engineering Systems Jeremy Watson to lead on its built environment research programme.

The programme, which is the largest of its kind in the UK, is designed to address the many challenges faced by the sector including climate change mitigation, adaption and resource scarcity. It is delivered by BRE and its five BRE Trust- funded University Centres of Excellence which are based in Bath, Cardiff, Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Brasilia.

New national sales manager for Sika Sarnafil

Charles Pierce has been promoted to the position of National Sales Manager for the Sika Sarnafil roofing brand.  Charles was previously Southern Sales Manager and brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He will report to the Business Unit Manager for Sika’s three roofing brands, Rod Benson.

Golfers 'putt' in big effort for charity push

Selco Builders Warehouse staff, suppliers and customers displayed their golfing prowess to boost a charity push by more than £7,000.

Almost 100 players took part in the charity golf day which was organised by Selco’s Swansea branch and played at the picturesque Gower Golf Club.

Story Homes wins big at Northern construction industry awards

STORY Homes has scooped two prestigious titles at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) awards ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

Barry Spedding won the LABC Warranty Regional Site Manager of the Year award for his work on the Mabel Wood development in Great Clifton, Cumbria.

‘Giz a job’ plea lands Scotswood work at The Rise

Marching onto the construction site at The Rise in Scotswood, Douglas Arkle boldly asked “Giz a job.”

And – just like the Yosser Hughes character in the 1980s drama, Boys from the Black Stuff - his direct approach paid off.

Douglas, 54, who used to live in Scotswood before his home was demolished to make way for redevelopment, was taken on as a general labourer at the site where the first 377 of 1,800 new homes are now under construction. He said: “I remember the TV series with the Yosser character and his determination to find work.

Career change as daughter takes on father's legacy

Taking over her father’s construction business was not just an emotional rollercoaster for Gemma Day but it became a huge learning curve as well.

Gemma, 29, now runs Dowlas UK Ltd, a leading developer heavily involved in bringing forward employment development at Junction 21 Enterprise Area (J21EA) off the M5 in North Somerset.

Association of Women in Property announces new South Wales Chairman

The South Wales branch of Women in Property (WiP) has announced its new branch Chairman. Helen James of JLL takes up the role from 1st March for one year.

Helen who has been a member of WiP South Wales for four years and was previously a member of WiP South West branch, is Associate Director in Valuation Advisory at the JLL Cardiff office. Helen qualified in 1990 and has over 23 years post qualification experience, primarily in South Wales but also in the South West. Helen has valuation experience in both the public and private sector having worked for the former Welsh Development Agency for 11 years.
