A new Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard is filling a skills gap in the building sector and giving a boost to school-leavers, according to West Yorkshire construction employers.
The recently-approved Construction Support Technician (CST) Apprenticeship is the result of two and a half years of collaboration between Leeds College of Building, a network of employers, professional bodies (CABE & CICES), associations (TICA & CECA), and major contractors across the construction and built environment sector.

The construction industry is undertaking a dramatic U-turn as sustainable specification comes to the fore, with a growing ambition to build with timber. As such, from 2000 to 2020, global timber consumption has increased by 1.1% per year.
While timber is more sustainable than steel or concrete, one of the key barriers is the concern that wood burns. This view is beginning to change as new innovations in improved fire protection for timber mean industry professionals are becoming more willing to consider it along with other standard materials. This uptick in timber specification for structural purposes has been enabled by better training regarding the use of timber in construction and improved knowledge.

Michelmersh to produce the world’s first 100% hydrogen fired clay bricks

Michelmersh has announced its successful bid to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) UK Government, Industrial Fuel Switching competition to conduct a feasibility study to replace natural gas with hydrogen in the brick making process. The programme is part of the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) which aims to provide funding for low-carbon technologies to decreasing the costs of decarbonisation.
The project represents a global flagship physical study to replace natural gas with hydrogen in brick manufacturing. Phase 1 of the project will demonstrate the viability of fuel switching and will see hydrogen used in the clay brick production process at Michelmersh’s Freshfield Lane site. The project aims to inspire radical change across the sector and present opportunities and evidence-based research to support manufacturers on their journey to heavily decarbonise the production processes.

UK Construction Week London leaves a lasting impression on industry leaders

Following three days of debate and discussion regarding culture change in construction, the feedback from UK Construction Week (UKCW) visitors has shown a clear sense of optimism and opportunity about how the industry moves forward to tackle its biggest issues, from fire safety and decarbonisation, to digitalisation, offsite manufacturing, diversity and inclusion.
UKCW’s London show – its first in the capital – was attended by more than 20,000 visitors last week (3-5 May 2022), alongside 300 exhibitors showcasing more than 10,000 products, some of which were being shown for the first time.

Digital transformation of the Czech construction Industry

The Norwegian construction software provider Cobuilder and the Czech Standardisation Agency (CAS) have signed an agreement to support the digital transformation of the construction sector in the Czech Republic.
The strategic partnership will support implementing an efficient information management system that will enable the adoption of a Data Standard for Building Information Model (DSBIM), known in Czech as “Datový standard staveb” or “DSS”, and a common digital language for the national construction sector.
