HVO becomes the norm at O’Donovan

The chair of the COP 27 committee has pleaded with world leaders to step up and make good on their COP 26 pledges for action by 2030 following on from the devastating news that global temperatures rise is set to hit 2.5 degrees by the end of this century.

O'Donovan Waste has taken action to put the environment before profit and switched to using solely Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) biofuel for its entire fleet of 100 lorries. The first waste company to exclusively use HVO, O'Donovan has raised the bar in terms of sustainable working practices.

BP Mitchell lowers insurance premiums with new Durite camera kits

An aggregates specialist has reduced its insurance premium and successfully fought ‘crash for cash’ claims after upgrading its vehicle camera systems.

BP Mitchell Haulage Contractors Ltd is a leading provider of aggregates for the construction sector. It operates more than 60 trucks, predominantly tippers as well as 10 mixers and five articulated vehicles. The Hatfield-based company, which produces its own aggregates, holds FORS silver accreditation.

Construction and engineering apprenticeships for young Londoners

An apprenticeship programme which will bring jobs in the construction industry to young people in East London has been launched through a partnership between New City College and Polyteck.

Construction and facilities management organisation Polyteck has teamed up with the college in a bid to tackle the shortage in trade roles across the UK.

Construction students win awards at New City College presentation evening

Construction and Engineering students were honoured at the annual New City College Student Achievement Awards presentation evening held during Love our Colleges Week at the Leonardo Royal London Hotel.

The celebratory evening paid tribute to excellence, hard work and determination – recognising those students who had achieved beyond expectation and often despite adversity.

The fifth annual Colleges Week, a national celebration of further education providers, commences today (17-21 October 2022).

As this year’s awareness campaign centres on the theme of ‘Staff, Students, and Skills,’ Leeds College of Building is focusing on student support to help counter the devastating effects of the cost-of-living crisis.

GSHPA discusses hot topics and raises over £2,500 for worthy causes

Blood Cancer UK, Walking with Giants Foundation, Young Persons Advisory Service (YPAS) and The Florrie charity have all benefited from a share of over £2,500 raised by the Ground Source Heat Pump Associations (GSHPA) members at their Conference and Charity Dinner held at the Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa, Gargrave, North Yorkshire last month.

Secured by Design visits Strongdor

Industry-leading steel door manufacturer Strongdor Ltd opened up their factory to Crime Prevention Police Officers from across the North West to discuss the role steel doors can play in crime reduction and security solutions. Working on behalf of the Police Service throughout the UK to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives to design out crime, Secured by Design visited Strongdor for their knowledge and expertise of steel door security solutions for new build and refurbishment projects.

A new offshore wind turbine project comes to Norfolk

As part of their sustainability strategy, Constructionarium are in the process of decarbonising their site and projects, alongside launching new renewable projects. Friday saw the conclusion of one of their pilots – an offshore wind turbine project called “AngliaZero”.

Delegates construct a 7.7m high semi-submersible platform, mast, and turbine in a dry dock. After flooding the dock, the platform is towed into position to predefined co-ordinates. Once in the correct mooring location, the turbine is connected to land and commissioned into use. The output controls a domestic appliance in a “house” constructed as part of the project. The integrity of the system is checked and verified by a “Client” which draws the week’s learning to a conclusion.
