Create a safer working environment with these three vital steps

Over the last two years, 5.5 million working days have been lost due to non-fatal workplace injuries. Even though construction site safety has improved over the years, it clearly remains a critical challenge for the industry. 

Bradley Markham, director of Bull Products, a manufacturer of life-saving fire protection equipment, shares the three vital steps that health and safety professionals should take to ensure a safer working environment.

MP's inquiry hears oral evidence on falls from height

The recently formed APPG on Working at Height held an oral evidence session as part of its inquiry into the number of serious injuries and fatalities which occur as a result of a fall from height. The APPG, which is chaired by Glasgow Central MP Alison Thewliss and supported by PASMA, were delighted to welcome over a dozen leading figures in working at height, including two survivors of a fall from height.

MPs David Hanson and Alison Thewliss, took part in a wide ranging discussion about the key issues for preventing falls from height. Ranging from education, culture, planning and the greater use of technology.

Financial services broker expands coverage in Lincolnshire with key appointment

Financial services broker, Midlands Asset Finance (MAF), has bolstered its presence in Lincolnshire by appointing a new relationship manager in the region.

Based in Lincoln, Tom Gawne has joined the business to support SME and major corporate clients in Lincolnshire and the East Midlands with any asset finance, invoice finance or property funding.

Working in the Lincolnshire area for the last ten years, Tom joins MAF from SME Banking, Lloyds Banking Group, where he spent a total of eight years as a commercial manager, looking after a portfolio of clients and providing loan and overdraft solutions.

SkyWalk’s safety system is a towering success

The SkyWalk at Blackpool Tower is an impressive 380ft high, glass viewing platform. The floor is five centimetres thick and from the platform there are spectacular views into the Irish Sea and over the famous Blackpool Promenade. It is the highest observation deck in North West England.

Visitors can look right through the glass below their feet for an exhilarating sense of how high they actually are. To make sure they can enjoy this to full effect, the floor of the platform has to remain transparent with the underside being cleaned at least twice a year.

ASFP announces CPD seminar in Scotland

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) will be holding the next in its series of regional CPD seminars in Perth, Scotland on 25 April 2018. The free-to-attend seminar aims to improve awareness of passive fire protection and help delegates to understand the vital role of compartmentation in maintaining fire safety in buildings. 

Arranged in collaboration with Aviva Insurance and Local Authority Building Standards Scotland, Understanding Passive Fire Protection provides an introduction to the types of passive fire protection systems found in buildings and explains the importance of the correct specification, installation and maintenance of all such systems.
