Free advice to redress balance of power from construction giants

UK commercial law firm, Al Bawardi Critchlow, today launched a range of legal services specifically designed to enable smaller contractors and subcontractors in the construction sector to negotiate fairer contract terms with their larger employers. These services include free-of-charge, half-day workshops to educate subcontractors in the clauses commonly included in construction giants’ contracts, which could – if enforced – impact their cash flow, endanger their business operations, or even threaten their solvency.

250 workers protected during work on Bond Street station

Bull Products, a manufacturer of life-saving fire protection equipment, has won a contract to supply its prestigious alarm system during work on Bond Street tube station.

Bull’s Cygnus Wireless Alarm System replaced a previously installed system that couldn’t deliver what the contractors required for the project – a high-connectivity alarm system with a powerful radio frequency which was strong enough to work underground. The previous system took two minutes to send an alert to the panel from alarms situated underground at platform level. Once installed in place of the old system, the Cygnus System received an alert instantaneously when an alarm was raised.

Why Contractors & FM Providers can use BIM to gain an advantage

Building information modelling or BIM is not new. The UK Government’s Construction Strategy 2011-2015 recognised that the construction industry needed to challenge the existing business models and practices in order to create a collaborative methodology that would deliver cost reduction and innovation throughout the supply chain. The result is that all UK Government construction projects, as of 4 April 2016, now include BIM.

However there remains a tension between contractors and FM providers on how BIM can be used effectively within a project, it can be seen as costly, time consuming and resource intensive. For these reasons the commitment to BIM has largely remained the domain of the public sector. However BIM should be seen as a revolutionary opportunity for designers, contractors and FM organisations working together from conception to delivery on design, build and operate projects.
