ASFP releases programme for London seminar

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has now released the full programme for its CPD seminar in central London on 23 October 2019. The seminar, at the Aviva Building, 1 Undershaft, London EC3P 3DQ, aims to improve awareness of passive fire protection and help delegates to understand the vital role of compartmentation in maintaining fire safety in buildings. 

The ASFP is pleased to announce that Peter Caplehorn, vice chairman of the Industry Response Group on Competence for Building a Safer Future, will offer a review of the Group’s proposals relating to competency in construction contained in its recently published report, Raising the Bar.

Leading scaffolding and special access providers, Palmers Scaffolding UK Ltd has reached an epic milestone in its rich and long-standing heritage – achieving 100 years since it was incorporated as a business brand, back in 1919.

A century ago this month, Palmers Scaffolding founder, Edwin Palmer took the decision to transform the well-known scaffolding and access family business name into a company – formally founding it as the legal business structure it still is today, now under British ownership with CEO, well-known scaffolding man and entrepreneur, Colin Butt at its helm.

Altus Safety celebrates 3 years of success

Safety at height experts, Altus Safety, is celebrating the company’s third anniversary with figures that reveal the business is on track for a £2 million turnover by the end of this year, from a standing start in August 2016.

Established by directors Simon Mealor and Mark Weaver, who met while working at one of Altus Safety’s competitors, the company has completed more than 500 safety at height installations over the past three years. The pair have grown the business from a partnership to a full-time team of 12, along with five installation teams, and Altus Safety has delivered projects for around 300 customers to date.

Fire resistant concrete repair for vertical and overhead applications

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, with a wide range of regular uses. However, problems such as freeze thaw, spalling/cracking, carbonation, chemical attack and impact, amongst others, can all result in concrete damage. 

When a repair is needed, reducing downtime and maintenance costs are top priorities. Yet, there can be situations where applications aren’t straight forward, such as overhead and vertical repairs. Using traditional or alternative concrete repair methods can mean more time and costs associated with a repair. Formwork or shuttering is also required to mould the material into shape and provide support during and after the application. Not only does this extend the maintenance period, but also introduces further labour and material costs.

Culture and attitudes impact safe working at height

In July 2019 the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published its annual workplace fatality figures showing that deaths due to falls from height have risen 11% in the last five years, and 14% from last year. In 2018/19, 40 fatal injuries to workers were due to falls from a height.

Falls from height continue to claim more lives in the workplace than any other factor. The latest HSE statistics demonstrate there is not one single industry that can claim it has solved the Health and Safety culture issue which still exists. While some sectors such as construction and agriculture remain the most dangerous, there is still a wide-reaching lack of education for safe Work at Height. This is even in despite efforts from government, regulators and charities to draw attention to the deadly risks.
