Apprentice wins medal at World Skills 2011

apprenticeDoosan Power Systems apprentice Jake Rambaldini won a bronze medal in the welding category at the World Skills event held recently. The 20-year-old, from Daventry, East Midlands was selected to fly the flag for the UK's engineering construction sector at this year's event where over 1,000 competitors from 53 countries competed for medals in 45 different skills.

Rambaldini, who has just finished an ECITB NVQ Level 3 Welding apprenticeship at Doosan Power Systems, and won a gold medal at SkillsWeld in 2010, said he was "thrilled" to have won a bronze at the largest international vocational skills competition in the world, praising the support that he received during his education, training and preparation.

"Doosan have been so willing to invest in me and the other apprentices. I felt I was given an excellent opportunity to excel in my trade. It's important for companies to provide this support to help us succeed.  The three years of my apprenticeship were hard work but have been extremely rewarding, and I've had great opportunities to take part in various competitions and travel," he said.

Martyn Fletcher, chief welding engineer at Doosan Power Systems, and has worked closely with Jake added: "We are very proud of Jake and his success in the World Skills competition. Doosan Power Systems is now leading the energy industry in adult and apprentice training, in response to UK skills shortages in high integrity welding. But it's not just about numbers - Jake's position in the competition shows Doosan Power Systems' training programmes produce skilled workers of the highest standard and we wish him every success in the future."
