UKATA announces new CEO appointment

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) has announced the senior appointment of Terry Barker MA, PG DIP, as Chief Executive Officer. This newly-created role serves to continue to enhance the organisation as the leading training association in its field.

Terry will officially take up his new duties with the Association from 1 January 2013, and his appointment ends UKATA’s search for a suitably experienced and qualified CEO to take the Association forward. Terry is now tasked with leading from the front and achieving the ambitious growth targets set by the Executive Committee.

“We are delighted to have secured Terry’s services as our new CEO,” said UKATA Chairman Mike Smith. “Several high calibre candidates were interviewed but the Executive Committee felt Terry ticked all the right boxes, with his combination of knowledge, expertise and passion essential for this key post. Terry’s reputation in the industry precedes him and I’m sure his appointment will prove an important strategic watershed for the Association.”

A founding director of UKATA since its inception, Terry’s name is a byword in the asbestos industry, having worked in the sector for almost 25 years. Terry was heavily involved with the Asbestos Training providers Working Group (ATPWG) with the Health and Safety Executive. His success since April 2012 in the interim, as Technical and Operations Manager made him the ideal choice for UKATA’s first full time CEO. Commenting on his new role, UKATA’s CEO Terry Barker said, “I am delighted to be taking on this role for UKATA. I remain committed to what UKATA stands for and aims to achieve in the asbestos industry. Effective standards and practical training to support a competent workforce is essential and I believe my knowledge and experience can make a lasting difference. It’s been a momentous year for UKATA, and I am confident the Association can rise to the challenges and opportunities ahead in 2013 and beyond.”

“With Terry’s appointment, I and my fellow Executive Committee members are confident we have the right personnel in place to meet our future strategic objectives,” added Mike. “Management restructuring now ensures we have strength and experience in depth, while Terry’s new role gives us an experienced and proactive CEO who will spearhead our drive to continue to establish, set, verify and maintain appropriate standards among asbestos training providers in the United Kingdom.

“We are all familiar with the requirements of an increasingly diverse membership and the appointment of Terry as CEO means we will be position to ensure we are not just meeting, but exceeding these expectations in the years ahead,” Mike concluded.

UKATA is a leading authority in asbestos training in the UK, a privileged position that has only been achieved by hard work, dedication and a focus on Quality and Standards that is second to none. From a standing start, UKATA now has over 150 fee paying Members with many more Membership applications pending and forthcoming new legislation likely to mean the demand for Training and Consultancy services offered by Members will increase further.
