1. The Building Safety Bill

The Building Safety Bill, currently making its way through Parliament, is set to change how certain buildings are constructed, maintained and made safe. It will include regulatory reforms on fire safety and quality of construction products and will introduce a developer levy. Virtually everyone involved in the design, construction and management of higher-risk buildings will be affected.

60 not out! David Armitage celebrates a lifetime in brick

0n7442 David Armitage, the founder and chairman of the award-winning York Handmade Brick Company, is celebrating 60 unbroken years in the brick industry.

David joined the industry in 1961 as an apprentice fitter with his family firm George Armitage & Sons, based at Rothwell, near Wakefield. He moved into sales in 1963, eventually becoming Sales Director and later Marketing Director when the business boasted a £20m turnover.

New report says embedding heritage-led regeneration key to historic towns' future

Embedding heritage-led regeneration within wider investment programmes aimed at revitalising high streets and enhancing local and regional infrastructure, will more effectively drive the growth and renewal of Britain’s historic town centres, says a new report from national planning and development consultancy, Lichfields.

The ‘Historic Opportunities’ report comes at a time of changing fortunes for the nation’s historic towns and sheds light on the environmental, economic and social contributions that heritage-led regeneration can deliver long-term for hundreds of locations across the country.

Appointed in September 2021 into a new role with key priorities in levelling up, skills, construction, and net zero, Lee Rowley (Minister for Industry) says the UK needs a multi-disciplinary approach if it is to stay competitive and deliver a workforce that can meet the government’s priority of decarbonising the Built Environment at speed.

His comments came as he visited Constructionarium, a not-for-profit organisation based in Norfolk. It provides essential practical programmes for students in higher and further education studying Built Environment courses and for professionals across the sector who lack practical application by “Turning Theory Into Practice”.

Finn Geotherm celebrates 15th anniversary and £22m for customers via RHI scheme

Norfolk-based renewable heating expert Finn Geotherm, is celebrating two major landmarks - its 15th year in business and securing a total of £22million in Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments for customers who have switched to a heat pump for their heating.

Established in 2006, the company was started by technical director David Alston, who first ran Finn Geotherm from a container unit on his father's farm. An engineering graduate, David spotted the opportunity to bring heat pump technology, which was being widely used in Finland, to heat homes here in the UK. Today, the company has modern offices and a showroom just off the A11 and employs a total of 25 staff. In its 15 years, the company has installed more than 1,000 systems in properties ranging from two-bedroom bungalows and converted windmills to stately homes and even at the zoo in locations across East Anglia and beyond. Heat pumps are now widely accepted as one of the best low carbon heating systems available, with the Prime Minister's Ten Point Plan committing to deploy 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028.
