UKATA sponsored conference will deliver the Truth on Asbestos

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) is using its position as a sponsor of this year’s ‘Asbestos the Truth 2013’ conference taking place on Wednesday 27 November in Manchester, to drive home the message on the continued dangers of asbestos and the importance of training when it comes to a material that remains the biggest cause of work related deaths in the UK.

UKATA is sponsoring the one day conference at the Hilton Deansgate together with Association member and asbestos awareness training provider Lucion Environmental; with the aim of providing up to date information on asbestos legislation, training, management and awareness.

“These conferences are always a success and this will be the second year UKATA has taken a stand as well as being an event sponsor,” said UKATA Chief Executive Officer Terry Barker. “The event targets those who require asbestos awareness training or who have a responsibility to manage asbestos in their working role. UKATA will be delivering an inconvenient truth – that asbestos remains a big killer in the workplace and that training is essential to ensure the safety of employees and public alike when coming into contact with this deadly substance.”

Now in its fourth year, this year’s event is expected to be bigger and more influential than ever, with big names in politics, industry and journalism all expected to play a big part in the programme. From 9.00am to 12.30, Session 1 will consider ‘Situating the Risk’, which will include a senior parliamentary figure discussing ‘Asbestos in UK Schools’ while from 12.00 to 12.30, a live panel debate will take place for the first time with contributors discussing the UK Asbestos Crisis.

The afternoon session from 1.15pm to 4.15pm has a selection of speakers dealing with issues in connection to Brownfield sites and regeneration, including quantifying and managing the risks of Asbestos in Soil to how to select a provider.

Asbestos is still out there in many buildings and all workers need to be aware of what to do if they believe they risk coming into contact with a killer - those diagnosed with Mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure have a life expectancy of just 9-12 months and there remains no known cure.

“Despite the 4,500 plus workers who still die every year as a result of asbestos related illnesses, it remains a little known fact that asbestos is still the biggest single cause of work related deaths in the UK,” added Terry. “This is something UKATA is determined to change by challenging misconceptions and ensuring the training is robust enough to ensure the safety of workers and conferences like Asbestos the Truth are the prefect place to get the message across.”

Asbestos the Truth aims to cover everything you need to know about asbestos management in one day, including the option of complementary asbestos training.
