Outstanding talent from the next generation of painting and decorating professionals was on display at the recent Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year Competition.
The prestigious competition, held at Birmingham’s NEC as part of the national Skills Show, showcased the skills excellence of eight regional finalists vying for the title as well as promoting careers in the industry to more than 80,000 young people who visited the three-day event from November 16-18.

Bull Products protects world’s most famous clock, Big Ben

Bull Products, a manufacturer of life-saving fire protection equipment, has won a major contract to supply its renowned Cygnus alarm systems during the £61 million restoration of Big Ben.
Having already supplied more than 30 of its Cygnus alarm systems, more alarms are to be installed next year. The temporary alarm systems will be installed around and outside of the 96-metre-tall building, and will ensure the building is protected against intruders, whilst protecting workers on site over the next four years.

Beaulieu farm demolition contract awarded to Mick George Ltd

The vibrant new ‘Beaulieu’ district that is being created on the north-eastern edge of Chelmsford, is making significant progress, and having recently completed phase one of the ‘Beaulieu Park’ region of the project, attention has swiftly turned to another of the progressing neighbourhoods under development.
East Anglia based Construction Company, Mick George Ltd has been contracted to complete Demolition works predominantly focused on the removal of Cottages, Barns, Stables and Farmhouses, that made up a now redundant compound, which will permit continued works on the remaining ‘estates’ that complete the project.

Michelmersh collects Supreme Winner Award at 2017 Brick Awards

Michelmersh was awarded the ultimate accolade at the 2017 Brick Awards ceremony, the 41st Brick Development Association annual event, on Thursday 9th November. As a result of the British Manufacturer’s premium quality products and first-rate customer service, Michelmersh was announced the winner of several categories; including Best Urban Regeneration & Large Housing Development (above 25 units). Britain’s Brick Specialist continued its success throughout the evening by collecting the most prestigious award, the Supreme Award for South Gardens, designed by Maccreanor Lavington Architects and built by brickwork contractor Lee Marley Brickwork Ltd.

1,200 trained by Construction Wales Innovation Centre before SA1 hub opens

Around 1,200 people have received training from the new Construction Wales Innovation Centre (CWIC) – before the hub has even been built at the SA1 waterfront site.
CWIC is already delivering world-class training and courses including the scaffolding management course at Coleg Cambria and the heritage plastering course at Coleg y Cymoedd – taught for the first time in Wales.
To date the partnership which includes Coleg Sir Gâr, Coleg Ceredigion, Coleg Cambria and Coleg y Cymoedd has also delivered over 170 events.

Bursaries for Bedford College students

Full-time construction students at Bedford College are being helped to take up apprenticeships with a £500 bursary from the Connolly Foundation.
On signing up for an apprenticeship, the young people will receive the money to help towards tools or transport costs.

The one-day event, which was held in association with headline sponsor AMI Group, had the theme of ‘Understanding and Influencing the Future of Construction Plant Hire.’ Held for the fourth consecutive year, the conference provoked interesting debate on important and business-critical developments in construction plant hire, such as air quality in London, supply and demand of plant operators and the effect of health on productivity.

Heckmondwike FB, one of the UK’s leading carpet manufacturers, has been shortlisted in trade magazine Tomorrow’s FM’s annual awards for its Supacord fibre bonded carpet range.
The national magazine, which is read by facilities managers across the UK, selects the top 50 companies that manufacture products and services that it feels are worthy of winning the prestigious ‘best product/service title’.
A full list of entries is released in a Guide produced by the magazine in January and readers are invited to vote online for who they believe deserves to win. Three winners then receive a trophy, which is presented in March.
