The Considerate Constructors Scheme is taking action to raise awareness of the important issue of drugs and alcohol across the UK Construction industry. The Scheme’s new 'Spotlight on...' campaign focuses on taking measures to protect and safeguard the entire workforce in relation to drugs and alcohol.
The need for attention and consideration could not be more of a priority than within the already safety-conscious construction industry. A recent survey of over 1300 people working across the Industry discovered that 59% have concerns over the effects of drugs and alcohol in construction.

A call for papers has been issued for a major triennial international urban trees research conference. Trees People and the Built Environment 3 (TPBE 3) will take place on 5-6 April 2017, at the University of Birmingham, and follows on from acclaimed events in 2011 and 2014.
This year the conference will focus on two significant areas of research; Roads to Place - Why trees are an integral part of highway transport design on Day 1 and The Health Crisis – the role of trees in improving human health (Mental, physical, social and cultural) on Day 2.

Safehinge saves UK schools £20 million as concerns mount over costs

A Scottish company is making a major contribution to the problem highlighted by a recent Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) report on the amount of cash being wasted on school buildings in the UK.
While the RIBA study concluded that costs of £150 million could have been avoided if schools had been better designed, Glasgow company, Safehinge, has revealed that its products have saved an estimated £20 million in life costs for British schools since 2009.

CISRS announce new Continuing Professional Development courses

CISRS has announced that from 1 June 2017 it will introduce a two day Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course, which will become a mandatory requirement prior to Scaffolder or Advanced Scaffolder card renewal.
CPD is an issue which has been discussed at length within the sector for over 10 years. Following correspondence with the HSE in 2015 urging CISRS to introduce CPD, as the scheme had been in existence for over 40 years without a formal route, it was agreed that the introduction of CPD would ensure that cardholders were kept up to date with the latest legislation and industry guidance.
