A construction expert at Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen has cited a missed opportunity in the sector, with companies failing to plan for the future during the economic downturn, and is urging innovative action to address the issue.
Rob Leslie, a course leader at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment, Robert Gordon University (RGU) and a former Chair of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in Scotland, believes that businesses are now panicking as the industry’s skills shortage starts to bite with a large percentage of the workforce rapidly approaching retirement age and fewer graduates coming through from universities and colleges.

Sustainable Concrete Solutions by Costas Georgopoulos

The challenges facing humanity in the 21st century include climate change, population growth, overconsumption of resources, overproduction of waste and increasing energy demands. For construction practitioners, responding to these challenges means creating a built environment that provides accommodation and infrastructure with better whole-life performance using lower volumes of primary materials, less non-renewable energy, wasting less and causing fewer disturbances to the natural environment. Concrete is ubiquitous in the built environment. It is therefore essential that it is used in the most sustainable way so practitioners must become aware of the range of sustainable concrete solutions available for construction. While sustainable development has been embedded into engineering curricula, it can be difficult for students and academics to be fully aware of the innovations in sustainable construction that are developed by the industry.

RICS UK Construction Market Survey, Q1 2014

- Hits: 4217
The private housing sector is driving a construction industry revival, although skills shortages threaten the pace of recovery, according to the latest RICS Construction Market Survey for Q1 2014.
The speed at which confidence is returning to the market is revealed by the fastest rate of growth in workloads since the Construction Market survey began in 1994 (net balance 43 percent), with improvement being driven by the private sector and, in particular, the commercial housing sector over the next 12 months. Most significantly, the effects are expected to be felt across the whole of the UK, rather than exclusively reserved to the London and South East hotspots. In the North of England, 44 percent of respondents reported rising workloads, up from 40 percent at the end of 2013.
