Kier introduces new training initiative

Kier Stoke is furthering its commitment to staff and enhancing customer service through a new training initiative.

The innovative scheme will train craft technicians to become multi-skilled, enabling additional repairs on residents' homes to be completed more efficiently.

Rospa honours local groups for workplace safety

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) handed out gold, silver and bronze honours at the annual Alan Butler Awards, which recognise excellence and achievement of organisations within the Safety Groups UK movement.

Safety Groups UK is made up of around 70 local groups, which each consist of health and safety professionals who give up their free time to promote, share information and offer practical help to employers in their communities in a bid to prevent accidents and ill health at work.

Jobless get free support and training

BOSSES at a training service say they are delighted with their new purpose-built facilities following one of their first sessions.

As part of its free, on-going training for young, unemployed people at Lambton Street Youth Centre, based in Sunderland, AMS Asbestos Management Services took a session last week at its training site in Cramlington.

Lambton Youth Street Centre aims to help people acquire the skills and knowledge that will enhance their CV and increase their employability.

Access body reports rise in training uptake

The Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ & Manufacturers’ Association (PASMA) has reported a “record breaking 60,000 candidates attended and successfully completed a tower training course at an approved PASMA training centre” in 2012. This compares with 50,000 for the previous year – an increase of 20 per cent.

PASMA is a trade association for the mobile access tower industry representing the interests of manufacturers, suppliers, specifiers and users. The association delivers and oversees the industry standard training scheme and liaises with key regulatory authorities and standards-setting bodies in the work at height sector.

OFT investigates construction training services sector

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has launched an investigation into suspected anti-competitive conduct concerning provision of training services to the construction industry.

The investigation relates to allegations that certain businesses have entered into anti-competitive agreements.

Details are scant and the businesses under investigation have not been named, but the OFT announcement suggests that its concerns focus on the activities of a trade association.
