ASFP responds to industry competency proposals in Setting the Bar report

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) welcomes the latest proposals on competence requirements for those working on higher risk buildings released by the Competence Steering Group (CSG) on 4 October in its final report ‘Setting the Bar’.
The report proposes an overarching system of competence made up of four key elements: a new competence committee sitting within the Building Safety Regulator; a national suite of competence standards – including new sector-specific frameworks developed by 12 working groups; arrangements for independent assessment and reassessment against the competence standards; and a mechanism to ensure that those assessing and certifying people against the standards have appropriate levels of oversight.

NSG Group and University of Cambridge sowing seeds for future glass applications

The NSG Group and University of Cambridge are collaborating on ground-breaking new glass applications, while using the latest technology to realise the future of manufacturing.
The Group, which owns Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, is currently working with the University’s Fluids in Advanced Manufacturing team (FIAM) to establish a way of printing conductive materials onto wide areas of curved glass surfaces.

Constructionarium reopens for business for the new academic year

Constructionarium Ltd are delighted to announce that they are now open for business for the new academic year after being forced to close in March due to the pandemic.
On Sunday 4 October they welcomed 60 students from the University of Southampton who spent the week on site on the Constructionarium site at Bircham Newton, Norfolk undertaking three projects: the Milau Cable Bridge, The Brewery Wharf Footbridge and the Gherkin.

NASC launches dedicated careers website

The NASC has launched a dedicated careers website aimed at encouraging would-be employees of all ages and backgrounds to take up a position in the scaffolding industry.
The site - scaffoldingcareers.nasc.org.uk - features more than a dozen detailed overviews of a variety of careers, from labourer and scaffolding operative through to SHEQ manager and estimator, each providing information such as what the role entails, what the responsibilities are and what key skills are advantageous.

Hot on the heels of the Supreme Court decision in Bresco Electrical Services Ltd v Michael J Lonsdale (Electrical) Ltd, law firm Myerson Solicitors have successfully represented Styles and Wood (in administration) on what may be the first summary judgment to enforce an adjudicator’s decision in favour of a party in administration, following the principles laid down in Bresco.
Styles & Wood (S&W), entered into a building contract with GE CIF Trustees (GECIF) acting through DTZ Investors for an office to residential conversion project at St Ann’s Square, Manchester. Following completion of the works, a dispute occurred regarding the final account of the multi-million-pound account.
