Steadmans welcomes new construction industry health and safety rules

Leading building products manufacturer Steadmans has welcomed new construction industry legislation which took effect this month.
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations are the main set governing the overseeing of health, safety and welfare on projects. The 2015 rules have replaced their 2007 predecessors and impose duties on people and organisations they define as principal designers, designers, principal contractors, contractors, workers, commercial clients and domestic clients.

New professors and PG courses in architecture and built environment

The University of Huddersfield is building on established foundations of excellence in the study of architecture by creating a range of postgraduate courses covering key areas of construction, sustainability and urban design. New professors and lecturers who are leading experts in their fields have been appointed, and the first cohorts of MA and MSc students will arrive in September 2015.

Trent & Dove Housing tenants to benefit from renewable heat

The UK’s most ambitious retrofit upgrades programme featuring ground source heat pumps in social housing is set to halve the energy costs of over 130 residents following a landmark scheme delivered by Trent &Dove Housing and Cornish ground source heat pump manufacturer, Kensa Heat Pumps.
Thanks to a pioneering system devised by Kensa Heat Pumps, the scheme will be the UK’s largest example of “micro district” ground source heat networks retrofitted into existing properties – all within a challenging three month schedule.

CISRS close part 1 courses 'loophole'

CISRS has announced that as of 1st September 2015 it will be a scheme requirement that anyone wishing to attend a CISRS Part 1 Scaffolding Training course must have held a valid CISRS Trainee Scaffolder or Labourer card for a minimum of six months.
Since the scheme began around 40 years ago, in order to be eligible to attend the Part 1 course a delegate must have had a minimum of six months on site experience as a as a Trainee Scaffolder or Labourer working under the direct supervision of a qualified scaffolder. They were not however requested to provide a copy of a valid CISRS card at this stage to demonstrate registration to the Scheme and help establish their time in the industry.
Leeds College of Building wins Balfour Beatty training contract

Leeds College of Building has secured a contract with multinational construction and infrastructure group Balfour Beatty, to deliver Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship in Sustainable Built Environment training to 13 of the firm’s most promising young quantity surveyors.

Bucks UTC launches campaign promoting careers in construction

Buckinghamshire University Technical College (UTC), along with sponsor Taylor Wimpey, one of the UK’s largest homebuilders, has launched a campaign promoting careers in the construction industry. Over 224,000 jobs in construction need to be created in the next five years* to meet the industry’s infrastructure demands and skills shortages. With over 150 career paths to choose from, there’s a great choice of different job opportunities for young people either in traditional building trades, or non-site roles such as design and technical. Despite industry encouragement, only one in 10 women pursue a career in construction, and the industry is keen to change this position.

UK Construction Group members signal support for PAS 402

The UK Contractors Group (UKCG) has today issued a statement expressing member support for the wider adoption of PAS 402:2013 by waste management contractors.
The aim of the PAS is to support waste contractors in reporting high quality data on landfill diversion and materials recovery. Originally developed by Constructing Excellence in Wales in 2009, it has been taken-up by waste management contractors in Wales but UKCG members would now like to see it being adopted in England.
