Andover College students attending one of the Construction courses at the College (NVQ Level 2) have put their skills into practice working alongside the professionals from Amiri Construction as the finishing touches are put to Sparsholt College’s new Motor Vehicle, Engineering and Agricultural Engineering Workshop. Part of a £3.2 million new build/refurbishment of the College facilities, the workshops are now state-of-the-art in terms of facility and environmental performance.
The Fareham based construction contractors, Amiri, are due to conclude work at the facility by August 2014, ready for the new academic year in September.
The students’ visit provided them with their first experience of an on-site full Health and Safety and risk assessment and site briefing before they started work on an external wall. Tim Jackson, the Principal of Sparsholt and Andover colleges, was invited by Amiri Director Neil Cole to inspect the students’ progress and eye for detail during the day.
Tim Jackson, College Principal, said “I am very proud to see the professional standard of the work of our students, recognised by one of our many Employers of the area, in allowing them to undertake part of the construction of one of our newest state-of-the-art buildings”
The Motor Vehicle, Engineering and Agricultural Engineering teaching and instructing team at the College are experts in their fields all having relevant industry and contacts which are actively maintained which are particularly useful to students in obtaining future jobs. Courses range Level 1 to Level 3 (A-Level equivalent standard) in Vehicle Maintenance, Engineering and Agricultural Engineering.
The completed buildings encompass many different workshops and teaching areas an administrative centre, tutorial rooms, an office, an apprentice suite, storage and the plant rooms. The buildings have a very high environmental performance and the new Building conforms to BREEAM Excellent standard, which is the highest level of environmental performance which can be awarded.
