Global optical manufacturer to open new facility in the region

USA based Thorlabs Ltd, a leading worldwide designer and manufacturer of photonic tools will shortly see work commence on its purpose-built 10,335m2 UK headquarters based at Lancaster Way Enterprize Zone, Ely.

More than familiar with the territory, local firm Mick George Ltd has been contracted to imminently undertake enabling works on behalf of MJS Projects.

The broad-based optical technology company which specialises in precision equipment for the photonics market currently produces the majority of its products from the Ely region in four leased buildings. However, the relocation will permit all operations to be consolidated at one destination, allowing for further growth of the business.

The new facility will see the organisation more than double its existing floor space, creating an ancillary office, warehouse, service yard, plant, car park and cycle parking, alongside site entrances and associated infrastructure, all scheduled for completion in 2020.

It’s forecast that upward of 500 job vacancies could be created longer-term, making Thorlabs Ltd one of the largest employers in the East Cambridgeshire District. The business has already begun preparations for the upturn in staffing requirements, working alongside local secondary schools and FE colleges to develop the appropriate skills.

Thorlabs has 15 substantial design and production facilities located in 10 countries throughout the world, providing specialist motion control systems and vibration isolation equipment for the scientific, medical research and academic sectors.

Michael George, Managing Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’Our services have played a significant role in shaping the infrastructure at Lancaster Way Business Park over the years, so its extremely pleasing to see the area continuing to grow and attract some major global organisations, further strengthening the business environment in Cambridgeshire.’’
