Tudor Roof Tiles scoops a win in the Pitched Roofing Awards

Tudor Roof Tiles Co Ltd, Britain's foremost independent handmade clay roof tile manufacturer, has scooped a win in the first ever national Pitched Roofing Awards.

King’s College Music School, Wimbledon, was proclaimed outright winner in the best ‘Commercial Property Application using Roof Tiles’ category using Tudor Roof Tiles working with Avonside Roofing Group.

Organised by RCI Magazine, the awards aim to reward excellence and highlight successful partnerships between architects, manufacturers and contractors as well as the highest standards of product quality and workmanship.

The new £10 million Music School, designed by Hopkins Architects Partnership, achieved worthy recognition for its use of Tudor’s handmade clay roof tiles, which were chosen over machine made alternatives for their subtlety of tone and texture variations.

As the building was located in a conservation area, the architect used a palette of traditional materials in an innovative and modern way with a stunning triangular pattern on the roof of the new concert hall and rehearsal rooms created solely from the distinctive shapes of bespoke roof tiles.

In order to create the complex geometric pattern, the roof tiles were all made by hand to a size of 400mm long and 100mm wide with a curvature that was within very small tolerances. Six different designs of bespoke tiles, in two colour-ways of each, were used and bespoke hip tiles were specially created with meticulous attention to detail from architect’s three-D drawings.

According to the judges: "The tiling pattern on this project is beautiful. It was good to see the tiles being used creatively, and the fact that it was completely bespoke to the building worked very strongly in its favour. The steep pitch lends itself to the design and it just looks great."

Paul Lythgoe, Managing Director of Tudor Roof Tile Co Ltd said: “We are delighted to have received this accolade in the inaugural Pitched Roofing Awards, which highlight the very best workmanship in the industry. It is a prize that we are very proud to have received, as it recognises our technical ability to meet challenging briefs requiring highly unusual bespoke shapes and sizes, which added greatly to the striking visual appeal of this project.”

Tudor’s clay roof tiles use the flexibility of age-old handmaking techniques in order to create an ‘instant aged’ and traditional time weathered appearance, which appeals to both heritage and architectural markets. Made from Etruria Marl clay, each tile is carefully hand-pressed, moulded and trimmed and then strengthened using advanced firing techniques, in order to give exceptional durability to modern performance standards.

In recent years, the company has received several accolades for the quality of its products, including the ‘Best Roofing System or Product’ category in the 2018 Build It Awards for its ‘Bespoke Handmade Clay Roof Tiles’ and a 2014 Build It Award for its authentic standard range of peg and plain tiles.
