The Corrosion Prevention Association, one of the associations that comprise the Structural Concrete Alliance, is piloting a University Engagement Programme at Coventry University. The scheme aims to raise awareness and understanding of corrosion issues in infrastructure and to encourage learning in the subject.
With over 50% UK construction work carried out in the repair, rehabilitation and upgrading of existing structures, or buildings, the Association hopes to create a link between employers and students and to ensure that students will have the available resources for the prevention of corrosion.
The course aims to provide a solid foundation of knowledge about corrosion, repair and protection of reinforced concrete together with some basic knowledge on the prevention of steel corrosion using paint coatings.
A series of five lectures were offered during March 2017. These covered: The Science and Mechanics of Corrosion; Effective Investigation and Diagnosis of Corrosion Problems; Repair Methods for Corrosion Damaged Concrete; Protective Coatings; Cathodic Protection.
At the end of the programme students were invited to submit a team project based on a real-life example. Case study data on a corrosion problem found in a civil engineering structure will be supplied by Coventry City Council, which is also supporting the programme.
The project required students to detail proposals on how they would investigate the problem, what options are available to rectify the damage and arrest the issue, and then to evaluate each option (based on health and safety, cost, effectiveness, carbon footprint, material selection, programme etc). The best submission will be awarded a prize of £1,000, which will be presented to the winner at a special CPA event.
In addition to the lecture programme, the students will be invited to attend a Structural Concrete Alliance Demonstration Day to provide a practical display to complement the theoretical material of the lectures.
The Structural Concrete Alliance is an umbrella organisation which brings together the Concrete Repair Association (CRA), Corrosion Prevention Association (CPA) and Sprayed Concrete Association (SCA) to provide a single co-ordinated voice for the structural concrete refurbishment and repair industry.
The Alliance offers a single point of contact for major clients and a definitive source of information and advice for all involved in the repair, refurbishment and management of concrete infrastructure and the protection from corrosion of a wide range of structures.
