Hunt for fresh young talent as popular competitions return

Following on from its successful launch last year, the RHS are once again on a mission to find the best emerging Landscape and Plant Design talent with the RHS Young Landscape Contractor (supported by BALI) and RHS Young Planting Designer 2017 competition.

Held at the fantastic RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in Cheshire, the popular competition will return for its second year in 2017, offering budding young talent the platform and support to display their planting and landscaping talents.

Tom Harfleet, Head of Show Development for the RHS said: “This new competition kicked off in style in 2016 with 3 Gold medal winning gardens and amazing, fresh young talent. We’re excited to find the next competitors and help support the young talent out there.”

The competition will challenge Young Landscape Contractors and Young Planting Designers to work together to build and deliver a Garden showcasing their skills and talent in their respective areas of horticulture and landscaping. RHS Tatton Park is a well-known platform for nurturing young talent, and aims to build on the success of the RHS Young Designer competition, now in its ninth year, which gives young designers who are new to the industry, the chance to design their first Show Garden.

At the end of the competition, one winning talent from each category will be crowned winner of RHS Young Planting Designer and winner of RHS Young Landscape Contractor, which is proudly supported by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), the UK’s largest Trade Association for landscape professionals, for a second year running.

BALI’s Chief Executive, Wayne Grills, said: “BALI is delighted to once again be supporting the Young Landscape Contractor finalists and their partners for what promises to be an exciting competition for 2017. The level of quality on show at last year’s event set an incredibly high benchmark with 3 Golds and Best Construction accolades being handed out, so we cannot wait to see what talent will be on display at RHS Tatton this July. BALI continually strives to promote the craftsmanship, skills and commitment of some of our very best young, hard-working and talented individuals from right across the industry and we are very proud to be part of the competition once again.”

Ewan Sewell was crowned RHS Young Landscape Contractor 2016 and Katie Maude, RHS Young Planting Designer 2016. Each Garden was also awarded a Gold Medal, a fantastic result for each pair taking part.

The RHS Young Landscape Contractor & RHS Young Planting Designer 2017 competition is now open to those aged 28 years and under.
