Lightweight steel roofing company Metrotile UK has completed the renovation of a leaking roof at the lakeside visitor centre of a countryside park in South Wales.
The innovative roofing solution was selected to provide a new covering for the building on Parc Bryn Bach, near the Blaenau Gwent village of Tredegar.
The previous porous roof tiles were found to be letting water into the café area and the popular facility now has an impermeable roof made of high quality lightweight steel tiles.
With a 40-year-guarantee, the new Metrotile roof has given the facility a new lease of life and an attractive makeover, in time for the busy summer season.
Metrotile UK is based in Chippenham in Wiltshire but, as the UK’s leading supplier of lightweight steel roofing, deals with renovation and new-build projects all over the country.
The project at Parc Bryn Bach was overseen by Cheltenham-based Barry Jordan, Metrotile’s sales director for the South of England and Wales.
Some 2,600 of Metrotile’s vandal proof Slate 900 profile, each covering almost half a square metre but weighing just 4.6kg, now cover the 1,300 square metres roof of the visitor centre.
The new roof was installed by Swansea roofing contractors MA Hartley, working with main contractor Merthyr Tydfil-based M Delacey and Sons.
Blaenau Gwent Council owns the site and leases it to Aneurin Leisure Trust, which manages the daily running of Parc Bryn Bach – 340 acres of mixed grass and woodland and a 36-acre lake.
Mr Jordan said: “This was an excellent project to be involved with for us, not only because of the scale of the job but also because of the impact the new roof has had on the facility as a whole.
“Bryn Bach Park is an aesthetically pleasing location but the previous roof was not doing the visitor centre justice. Now it has a smart new Metrotile roof installed it provides a stunning finish to an impressive building.
“We are delighted to have been able to help give a new lease of life to the facility, working with our excellent local partners.
“Metrotile supplies thousands of square metres of its tile profiles into Wales, for not only park buildings, but also for social housing, park home manufacturers, system buildings and schools and we look forward to continuing to work here.”
Jonathan Kivell, Park Manager for Aneurin Leisure Trust, said: “Since the landscape of Parc Bryn Bach was regenerated and developed in the 1980s, the site has offered visitors a diverse mix of facilities and activities.
“With the freshwater lake at its heart, the visitor centre is the showcase building and focal point of the park. We are delighted with the new roof and excited about the future of Parc Bryn Bach.”
Paul Exton of M DeLacey, said: “The new building looks extremely smart and the slate grey colour of the roof blends in really well with the surroundings.
“We must pay tribute to the work of MA Hartley roofing who did great work in inclement weather – they have been good to work with, as have Metrotile UK, throughout the process.
“Like the other parties involved in this project we are pleased to have been able to contribute to the renovation of a popular and well-used facility, improving it for the many people who will visit the park this year and in the future.”
Tony Clarke of MA Hartley roofing said: “Metrotile is a great product and a delight to work with. This was a relatively complex project with extensive hips and dry valleys, ridges and barge covers, which required almost 7,000 screws to fix it all together.
“We are approved contractors with Metrotile and have done quite a few projects with them, so when the council specified Metrotile on this job our name was put forward.
“Staff at the centre have been brilliant in giving us access and with a product like Metrotile which is so quick to install we have been able to provide a good-looking roof for the users. It’s a low-level roof so the visitors will really be able to appreciate the work which has been done.”
Metrotile UK’s performance in the past two years has been stunning, growing 30 per cent to £7.1m turnover in 2014/15 and witnessing further growth during the subsequent 12 months.
Growth has largely come from new markets, as homeowners, architects, specifiers and contractors begin to demand more sustainable products.
The company, which is based in the Sheldon Business Park in Chippenham, Wiltshire, sells lightweight steel roofing solutions which are made in a state-of-the-art factory in Belgium and are 100 per cent recyclable.
