Three vie for £100m Saatchi & Saatchi office job

Bam Construct, Brookfield Multiplex and Mace are all understood to be in the running to renovate the famous building on Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia, London.

Saatchi & Saatchi’s HQ is to be part-demolished and rebuilt with 55 new homes and 323,000 sq ft of office space in one of the West End’s biggest development projects.

The advertising agency was behind such campaigns as ‘Probably the best lager in the world’ for Carlsberg and ‘Labour isn’t working’ for the Conservative Party. It is due to vacate the building in March this year, after which work will commence.

Camden Council refused the planning application in May 2011, against the advice of planning officers who had recommended the scheme be approved.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson then stepped in to give the Make Architect project the green light in September that year, saying it was of major importance for the capital.

Saatchi & Saatchi has been resident at its West End home since the 1970s.

Sixteen of the homes are to be affordable and a £1.6m contribution will be made towards Crossrail.

A three-storey residential block will also be built at 14 Charlotte Mews. Combined with a third nearby site, 12,000 sq ft of offices and 36,000 sq ft of residential space will be created separate from the main building.

The mayor said at the time: “The capital’s ‘adland’, centred around Charlotte Street, has developed an international reputation for creativity and I have no doubt that its redevelopment can only be good news for both the West End and the wider London economy.”

Derwent London is developing the scheme, which will see the creation of additional space by the infilling of the courtyard and the building of two additional storeys.

Associated works include access roads, enabling, infrastructure, sewer systems and landscaping.

Completion is expected in 2016.
