Shepherd lands retail double in £13m wins

Shepherd Construction has landed two retail contracts worth £13 million in London and the South-east.

The contractor will build a £9m mixed-use development on behalf of the Cooperative Insurance Society on Oxford Street and a £4m expansion of the Clarendon Centre in Oxford’s Cornmarket Street on behalf of Lothbury Investment Management.

The London contract will see the development of 149-151 Oxford Street and 59 Berwick Street into retail, office and residential space.

The 64-week programme is due to begin this November and the project, designed by architect ESA, is targeted to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

The Oxford project will expand the 9,300 sq m of retail space by 10 per cent and enable the Clarendon Centre to remain competitive with other shopping areas within Oxford.

As part of the work Shepherd Construction will demolish one of the existing blocks and build 4,680 sq m of new units, increasing the space on offer by 1,160 sq m.

The work is scheduled to complete in October 2013.

Shepherd Construction’s regional managing director Mark Tant said: “We’re delighted to have won these projects as they once again show our ability to deliver cost effective solutions within an incredibly competitive environment.

“It also further cements our reputation within the retail sector, particularly after the successful delivery of Trinity Walk shopping centre in Wakefield, a project that Shepherd not only helped restart after it went into administration but then also worked with a new client to successfully complete the work within an ambitious timescale.”
