salford tesco construction given green light
Patton Construction has been appointed by Tesco to build a brand new supermarket in Pendleton, near Salford, Manchester.
Construction Enquirer reports that construction on the 130,000 sq ft supermarket is set to begin in the first quarter of 2012, at a cost of approximately £45 million.
Manchester Evening News has revealed the Tesco store will create around 600 jobs - possibly more if the contractor wishes to create jobs in construction by recruiting from around the local area.
Patton Construction is no stranger to building stores for the giant supermarket firm, having recently built Tesco's first green store in Ireland. The contractor was further commended with a Tesco Blue Award for delivering the building six weeks before deadline.
The firm will be taking features from the green Tesco store and implementing them at the Pendleton site. It will be built using a "glulam timber frame" and roof lights "will allow more natural light into the store".
In addition, a power plant, which will run on naturally-produced fuel like recycled vegetable oil, will generate electricity and make use of waste heat.
Matthew Magee, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, commented on the project: "We're really pleased that we can now press ahead with an exciting new store for Pendleton."
