Laing O'Rourke given go-ahead on £160m Guy's Cancer centre in Southwark

The proposal for the 20,000 sq m centre in Southwark, south London, was approved on Wednesday by the Trust’s board of directors, almost three years after a Laing O’Rourke-led consortium was selected as preferred bidder for the project, CN has learned.

The consortium is set to carry out the work after fending off bids from Bovis Lend Lease, Brookfield, Kier, Mace and Skanska in 2010.

The centre will be built at the corner of Great Maze Pond and Snowsfield and is scheduled for completion in 2016. The consortium also includes Stantec Anshen & Allen, Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners and Arup.

Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, the building was approved by Southwark Council’s planning committee in November last year.

Approval from the board of directors was the last hurdle to the development.

A total of £80m of the scheme’s funding is expected to be raised as a loan, with £25m from the trust, £25m from related charities, £15m from further fundraising and £15m from King’s College Hospital.

The trust is one of the largest in the UK, with an annual turnover of £1.1 billion and a workforce of 12,500 staff.

It provides acute and specialist hospital services for 1.6m patients a year.

The centre represents the first step in a masterplan to transform Guy’s Hospital.

The 14-storey building is to be arranged into three ‘care villages’, each arranged on top of the other. The three areas will specialise in chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a ‘one-stop’ area.

Each area is to be entered via a ‘village square’, with accommodation arranged on two or three subfloors, and will include landscaped balcony gardens.

The building is intended to bring together a number of outpatient services provided across the Guy’s & St Thomas’ sites, and to remove barriers between departments.

Laing O’Rourke is also in the process bidding against Brookfield Multiplex and Iridium Concesiones de Infraestructuras to build a £300m hospital in Teesside.

The contractor is also the preferred bidder under The Acorn consortium, which comprises John Laing, Laing O’Rourke and Interserve, for the £237m Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool.
