Construction to start on first major new Thames road crossing in 20 years

Construction is set to start today on the first new major road bridge over the River Thames in over 20 years.

Work on the £32M crossing between Walton-on-Thames and Shepperton in Surrey begins with foundations being laid ahead of installation of the bridge’s main support arches. It is due to be completed by the summer of 2013 and will replace two long-serving temporary bridges next to it, which close once the new one is open.

The design means there will be no piers in the water to open up views along the river and improve navigation for boats.

The new bridge is being built by Costain and was designed by consultant Atkins.

A crossing has existed at Walton in various forms since 1750. The first, which was a toll crossing, was built by Surrey landowner Samuel Dicker.
