Barr wins first contract with Asda for £6.5m superstore

Barr Construction has been appointed to create a new 40,000 sq ft Asda superstore on the Kingsway West, Dundee.

Barr has worked with major retailers including Waitrose, with whom CN reported it had won a fit-out deal earlier this week, but the £6.5m deal marks the Paisley-based contractor’s first contract with ASDA.

The new Dundee store will be a two storey building with a mezzanine floor, which will be the location for a customer cafe.

Barr’s construction team will handle the fit- out works as well as building the store and will work alongside civil and structural engineering consultants Bielski Associates and mechanical, electrical and public health consulting engineers Wallace Whittle. The designs are being created by Barr’s own in-house architectural team.

Work is expected to commence in January 2013 and the construction programme is scheduled to last for approximately six months before the store opens in summer next year.

Barr Construction construction director Paul Griffen said: “Barr has gained invaluable experience of delivering retail stores all around the country over the past 20 years.

“However, this will be the first store we will build for Asda and we look forward to bringing this experience to bear on the delivery of a quality project and hopefully cementing our relationship with a new client.”
