Housing recovery: is it just a case of starting from rock bottom?

Construction National blog logoIt has been a rollercoaster ride for the construction industry in recent months. While both the NHBC and RICS have reported continuing falls in registrations and sales, both are optimistic for the New Year. Glenigan, the lead source for contracts and new work in the industry, has seen a veritable seesaw of new starts. That won't be seen as registrations or sales for some time yet, so there is always a lag, but the figure for the construction industry as a whole rose by 3% for the quarter to November compared to last year. It followed a 1% fall in October and a massive 11% fall to September.

Private housing is leading the way, with the social housing sector starting to stir. A note of caution was sounded by Glenigan's economist Andrew Whiffin.

"The turnaround in the sector is a bit of a shock," he said, "but the steep increase this month has a lot to do with the weakness of the sector at the end of last year rather than any strength in the latest data."

Oracle Talks Skire Plans

Piecing together an integrated technology solution is never an easy process. So when construction technology vendors engage in M&A (merger and acquisition) activity, the thought is that integration between the two products should be seamless. However, that is not always the case.

Still, you do have some technology vendors making concerted efforts to ensure products being acquired won’t simply fall off the digital map, so to speak. For instance, Oracle, www.oracle.com, Redwood Shores, Calif., is looking to tie together some recent acquisitions under the mission of helping improve project and portfolio management for the construction industry.

False self-employment in construction industry 'robbing Treasury of £1.9bn'

Construction firms are increasingly using payroll companies to "codify false self-employment" in the industry, robbing the Treasury of around £1.9bn a year and leaving workers without even the most basic of employment rights, according to a new report.

The study, the Great Payroll Scandal, has been commissioned by construction union Ucatt.

It claims that workers are forced to sign contracts with payroll companies in order to obtain work. While in reality the worker is an employee for the construction company, they are officially classed as self-employed. This means they can be sacked without warning, do not receive holiday or sick pay, have no pension provision and are denied access to employment tribunals.

Infection control construction training helps trades preparation

Anthony Simone knows all about infection control methods for construction on hospital renovation sites.

That is because the drywall instructor at the Toronto-based Interior Finishing Systems Training Centre (IFSTC) took a comprehensive course on the subject in Las Vegas and hopes to pass on what he’s learned through a course organized for contractors in Toronto.

With infections in hospitals killing thousands of people across North America — and onsite construction seen as a potential source of infection — his objective makes sense.

Prequalification Tech for Construction

Is a subcontractor qualified for a project? Technology not only helps answer this question, but also stores data associated with subcontractor qualifications for use on a project. These days, more general contractors are using such technology to manage sub qualifications electronically.

One recent example comes from Miller Construction Co., www.millerconstruction.com, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., which is encouraging its subcontractor and supplier base to maintain a complete qualification profile inside the platform from jobsite123, www.jobsite123.com, Plantation, Fla.

According to jobsite123, open access to the platform allows for sharing of qualifications information between all project stakeholders. The data within the jobsite123 platform can also be automatically distributed to other construction software such as SmartBidNet from JB Knowledge Technologies, www.jbknowledge.com, Bryan, Texas.
