Lean and BIM Lead to Construction Safety

As initiatives such as lean and BIM (building information modeling) continue to move deeper into the construction industry, contractors are evaluating which are right for their particular operations. While some might view these two to be separate endeavors, others in the market believe there is definite value in tying the two together.

Gilbane Building Co., www.gilbaneco.com, Providence, R.I., for example, considers the two to be integral to jobsite safety. This was the topic of a recent industry presentation from the commercial contractor to the Lean Construction Institute.

William J. Gilbane, Jr., president and chief operating officer, Gilbane, says it all started as a cultural shift in how the company views safety and progressed to become part of its overall mission to maximize value on projects.

China to resume construction of nuclear plants

The construction of new nuclear power stations, which had been suspended since the Fukushima disaster in March 2011, will be resumed in China.

But only a small number will be launched by 2015 and all of them will be located at coastal sites.

Prior to the Fukushima disaster, some energy officials indicated China would embark on as many as 40 nuclear energy projects during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15), and at least seven inland provinces applied to host plants.

Beating draws attention to construction security guard safety

WorkSafeBC officers are assessing the operations and safety procedures for security guards who work at Canuck Security Services, after an employee was attacked and brutally beaten at a school construction site in Port Coquitlam, B.C.

“We are conducting an investigation on part of the regulations that deal with working alone or in isolation,” said WorkSafeBC Spokesperson Ally Skinner-Reynolds.

“A risk assessment is being undertaken to make sure the employer has precautions in place to minimize risk to workers when they are alone.”

Construction is under way on a new Springfield Symantec center

Symantec is building a security operations center at its Springfield facility to meet a growing demand for storing sensitive data, company officials say.

The computer security and data storage company said construction should be finished by November on the nearly 3,400-square-foot center, The Register-Guard newspaper reported Saturday.

The center will be staffed by about a dozen employees who will work in shifts around the clock, 365 days a year. It's unclear whether those workers will be new hires.

Camera for long-range gas leak detection

New infrared gas imaging camera equipped with a 75 mm lens; it iscertified for use in Class I Div 2 hazardous locations, enabling remote detection and visualization of gas leaks from a great distance

Opgal Optronic Industries, a Karmiel, Israel-based provider of thermal and long range near IR imaging solutions, announced a new long-range model of its EyeCGas infrared gas imaging camera, using a 75mm lens. Microstructural improvements enhance material properties

altDARPA merges structural engineering principles with new fabrication technologies to demonstrate microstructural control of materials at the micron level; the ultimate objective of the agency’s Materials with Controlled Microstructural Architecture (MCMA) program is to be able to develop materials in the future with properties tailored to meet specific mission requirements.

Exquisite buildings like the Eiffel Tower were made possible because of advances in structural engineering design methods. Truss structures, like the Eiffel Tower, are highly efficient; they can carry the same loads as solid structures, but at approximately one tenth of the weight. This weight and strength advantage is also what enabled the dramatic increase in building heights between 1885 and 1930, when buildings went from an average of ten stories to more than 100 stories, as epitomized by the Empire State Building. With its novel structural engineering, construction of the Eiffel Tower ushered in the age of the skyscraper.
