Roofing skills on show at SkillBuild national final

Over the course of three days, young people from around the UK came together to demonstrate their capabilities at the national final of SkillBuild. The event formed part of the 2014 Skills Show held at the NEC in Birmingham on 13th – 15th November.

SkillBuild is an important national multi-trade competition that takes place annually aiming to promote excellence amongst the UK's young crafts persons. This year the National Federation of Roofing Contractors managed the Roof Slating and Tiling and the Reinforced Bitumen Membrane (RBM) competitions.

On the run up to the final, young roofers from around the UK took part in regional heats which whittled down the numbers to justtwelve competitors. These remaining young roofers throughout the three day competition showed a high level of skill, workmanship and pride in their work, making the judges’ job all the more difficult.

We are pleased to announce the winners and runners-up were:

Reinforced Bitumen Membrane
Winner:Craig McVeagh (NCC Scotland)
Runner-up:Billy-Joe Sewell (NCC Midlands)

Roof Slating & Tiling
Winner:Kyle Friendship (Cornwall College St Austell)
Runners-up:Sean Keener (South Wales & South West Roof Training Group) and David Pearson (Leeds College of Building)

NFRC would like extend their congratulations to all the competitors, from the heats to the final, for taking part this year and to the support provided by their mentors, colleges and employers.

A very special thank you goes to our members who generously donated materials, resources and prizes for the competition, helping to make the competition a huge success. Sponsors this year were SIG Roofing, Hambleside Danelaw, S R Timber, Klober, Sandtoft, IKO and Sievert.
