The Institute of Roofing (IoR), the industry’s leading body for roofing qualifications and training, is looking forward to a positive year following its successful 33rd AGM held at the BRE’s Innovation Park in Watford recently.
Gordon Penrose, IoR Hon. President commented; “I am so pleased with the support and turn-out at our AGM and I will now be taking an active committee role to help drive us forward. We represent professional recognition, qualifications and standards within the roofing industry, and 2014 will see us launch an ambitious campaign.”
The IoR Chairman Alex Owens now enters his second year at the helm of the Institute and was delighted to inform the members that five new Governors would be joining the Board following the recent election process. All bring their own set of skills to the table and all will be working on the Institute’s various committees. Alex reported that the last year had been tough but confirmed that the outlook was very bright for the IoR with all committees reporting increased activity.
Out-going Education and Syllabus Committee Chair, Bob Cooper, commented that the membership courses at Licentiate and Associate levels had been well supported. He finished his report with a presentation to Student of the Year, Lesley Cowell (County Flat Roofing (UK) Ltd.) who received a trophy and cheque for £250 – sponsored by Lane Roofing.
Bob himself was also the subject of a presentation as he retires from office as Governor after seven years dedicated service. Bob’s special interest has been the training and development of roofers in general but in particular the development of members. Bob comments; “I am delighted that the current membership courses are enjoying such active participation and I looks forward to their continued success.”
This year’s guest speaker, Dr. Paul Blackmore BSc. PhD. FRMetS. CEng. MICE. MIStructE. rounded off the meeting with a very interesting and informative presentation on problems in roofing associated with wind damage - a message taken to heart by the members.
