NCC HELPS ROOFING PRACTITIONERS UPSKILL FOR THE GREEN DEAL

The National Construction College (NCC) - Europe’s largest construction training provider - has been working with industry to develop a Solar Panel Installation and NVQ course, to help roofing practitioners upskill so they can maximise on the opportunities being created by initiatives such as the government’s Green Deal.



The one day course is aimed at experienced Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card carrying roofing practitioners who would like to obtain these skills or wish to meet industry accreditation standards. For those who need to complete a competency based qualification in order to apply for a CSCS card, a further half day course is available to include an NVQ qualification.

The course is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of installers and will cover all aspects of installation for different types of roof structure or configuration, and comprise of classroom based theory, practical skills training and an exam prior to certification. The NVQ element will be will be delivered in a half day workshop, on site observation and site diary.

The course will include the following elements:
· Classroom session covering solar technology, the benefits and drawbacks

· Different types of solar photovoltaic cells – how they work, fixing and technology

· Solar Thermal collectors – how they work, fixing and technology

· Practical installation demonstrations

· Interactive session – installation of three types of solar panels, plus solar collector

· Test and certification

Andy Walder, Director of the National Construction College (NCC), said: “With the Green Deal coming into effect in October installers will need to be able to provide proof of formal competence in their area of expertise to take advantage of these opportunities and this can be achieved by undertaking our new solar panel installation programme.

“As the training arm of CITB-ConstructionSkills, we are in a unique position to be able to provide first-class training that meets the ever changing needs of the workforce, helping to strengthen the skills of workers.

“We do this by working closely with employers, listening and responding to them by developing bespoke and specialist training to meet their needs. This course aims to provide training where there is a gap in the market, and help ensure that the right skills are in place for economic growth.”
