CPI answers call for high quality mortar at new 'walkie-talkie' building
At 20 Fenchurch Street in the City of London, more than 300 tonnes of CPI EuroMix mortar has been specified for the construction of a new 37-storey skyscraper – nicknamed the Walkie-Talkie because of its distinctive shape.
Designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly to feature a highly unusual top-heavy form, the new 160 metre tall building replaces an ageing 1960s high-rise block. Upon completion in 2014, the ‘Walkie-Talkie’ will contain over 28,000m3 of concrete, 13,000 tonnes of steel and approximately 33,000m2 of glass.

COMBISAFE launches new innovative rebar socket
COMBISAFE has developed an innovative socket for use with its edge protection posts or traditional scaffolding. The socket comes complete with a hook and anchor to enable precast manufacturers to quickly secure it rigidly to the rebar without the need for wiring or spacers.
The socket is fixed at a junction of the rebar mesh before further reinforcements are added and the concrete poured. The use of the robust hook and anchor ensures the socket will not move while the casting table is oscillated or vibrated, or while the concrete surface is being keyed.
There’s a lot going on in the North – and the South. And Happy Birthday, Baron Rogers of Riverside!
While engaging in some background research for an article on regional construction activity in the North West, I came across the intriguing fact that there are no fewer than 50 regeneration projects going on in Cumbria alone. That is astonishing. At a time when activity is said to be at a low ebb, with funding dried up and bank lending non-existent, a small rural county in the far North West is virtually re-inventing itself.
How can this be? It is a reflection of an issue the RICS has been banging on about for some time: that the most effective and beneficial infrastructure projects are small in scale and local in scope, employing small businesses that in turn employ local people.
