Can nature help restore harmony in our cities?

Our cities are facing an uncertain future. Underground roads and automated transport, permeable pavements and water roofs, vertical farming and even glowing trees – from large-scale interventions to smaller scale enrichments, cities in the future will need to look vastly different to cities now.

Cities Alive – rethinking green infrastructure – shows how the creation of a linked ‘city ecosystem’ that encompasses parks and open spaces; urban trees, streets, squares; woodland and waterways can help create healthier, safer and more prosperous cities. To realise this vision, green infrastructure has to now take a more influential role in the planning and design of cities and urban environments.

UKATA calls for action in Global Asbestos Awareness Week

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) is backing this year’s Global Asbestos Awareness Week (1-7 April) by focusing on public awareness of the on-going dangers of asbestos and supporting US initiatives to make this a truly global campaign moving forwards in the wake of growing asbestos fears post 9/11.

“We still have legacy issues in the UK, but asbestos remains a global problem,” said UKATA Chairman Eddie Strong. “Asbestos is still the biggest cause of work related deaths in the UK and this figure is likely to rise as people develop asbestos related diseases like mesothelioma much later in life and up to 30 years after initial exposure. The aftermath of September 11 has also given new impetus to issues surrounding asbestos.”

Good exterior landscaping can add value to new build developments

Brett Landscaping is advising housebuilders to devote attention to the exterior landscaping of new build developments in order to enhance the saleability of ‘turnkey’ projects.

According to Andrew Gill, Marketing Manager at Brett Landscaping, dramatic changes to the housing market since the major downturn in 2008 has made selling properties far more demanding over the past few years. Even today, now that the market is starting to show signs of a sustained recovery, it is still essential to present a new property to best effect starting from when the prospective customer first approaches the property.
