Rare spider found in Texas shuts down $15M construction project

The spider, identified as a Braken Bat Cave Meshweaver, is an endangered, non-venomous species that lives in caves, has no eyes and is virtually translucent. Josh Donat, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said the recent discovery is only the second time the species has been spotted in more than 30 years.

KSA, Qatar drive growth in pre-cast concrete sector

altMany factors are driving the growth of the pre-cast concrete sector in the Arabian Gulf, from increased investment in the petrochemicals industry to a growing middle class. Bank of America Merrill Lynch, for example, sees three clear trends pushing the construction-dependent sector to new highs: "First, and most immediately, we believe heavy investment in petrochemicals will now begin to see improving returns due to their global competitive advantage. Second, we believe a shift will require an ongoing need to invest in regional infrastructure. Third, we see a social and economic need for a growing middle class, supporting the growth of consumer sectors."

This augurs well for the pre-cast concrete industry, which is not dependent on a building type but can tap into any part of the construction sector, be it residential, commercial or infrastructure.

DRICON Treatment up to the challenge in the Highlands and Islands

Construction National BorreraigLonza Wood Protection's DRICON fire retardant treatment is protecting the oak lining used in a beautiful award-winning home at Boreraig, on the Isle of Skye. The building, inspired by the blackhouse, a traditional style of Highland architecture, was designed by architect Neil Stephen of Dualchas Building Design to reflect the local landscape and heritage and to be a quiet and restful retreat for its Buddhist owner.

The house, facing a lochan and with views across the island, is lined throughout with oak-faced ply vacuum-impregnated with the DRICON fire retardant, creating a clean, minimal and attractive finish. The oak-finished panels spring open to reveal concealed shelves and storage areas to maintain the minimalist feel of the design. The wood was supplied by the timber contractors and shipped to Lonza Wood Protection for pressure-treating with the DRICON treatment before being returned to the site, ready for use.
