New zero carbon technology installed for the first time in commercial build

altAn innovative technology system that uses solar energy to heat buildings all year round is being installed for the first time in a commercial property.

The Zero Carbon Solution, which combines PV-T, heat pump and thermal energy storage, is being fitted into a 550m² office building in Faversham, Kent. Located at the Foundry business park, the property is a standard metal-framed construction and will boast no obvious visible signs of its carbon neutral credentials.

Built by developers Quinn Estates, the commercial unit will be home to renewable energy specialist Newform Energy, which is a joint venture partner in the Zero Carbon Solution with house builder Caplin Homes.

New grassroots sport development goes green

An iconic new grassroots sporting facility, designed to integrate effortlessly with its environment, has been officially opened in Thamesmead by Football legend Sir Trevor Brooking CBE. 

Built thanks to funding through the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity, and other contributors, Sporting Club Thamesmead boasts an outstanding new changing pavilion, floodlit third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP), and multi-use games area (MUGA) and represents a much-needed investment to an area that has significantly lacked in community facilities, particularly sports facilities, for many years.

Solartech achieves Green Deal installer status

altSolarTech Ltd is one of the first renewable energy specialists to achieve ‘Green Deal Installer' status across a wide range of measures under the under the Government backed Green Deal scheme.

The company meets the new PAS 2030 standard to install Condensing Gas Fired Boilers, Under-floor Heating and Heating Controls plus a number of renewable energy solutions, including Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps.

New website promotes greener recycling for construction industry

A new website is set to help the UK’s construction industry dispose of its polythene waste in a greener, more sustainable way. www.bpirecycling.co.uk  has been launched by Europe’s largest polythene waste recycler, bpi.recycled products, to outline the impressive breadth of material it can recycle and to highlight the lower carbon footprint nature of its operations and its second life products.

Wrightstyle scores with prestigious Wembley project

Wrightstyle, the leading steel glazing specialist, has completed a prestigious project for the London Borough of Brent’s new Civic Centre, the UK’s first “outstanding” BREEAM rated public building, which opened last month.

The 9-storey £100 million building, set within a 2.5 acre site, accommodates some 2,000 staff and councillors, and incorporates community facilities including a central library and learning centre, community meeting and performance spaces, Registrar's services, a large capacity assembly hall, and retail and exhibition space.

Superglass receives Westminster support for capital investment

Scottish manufacturing was on the Shadow Cabinet’s agenda when Alex McLeod, CEO of Superglass Insulation, one of the few independent manufacturers in the UK construction industry, welcomed Labour Members of Parliament, Iain Wright and Gordon Banks to the company’s plant in Stirling. Andrew Warren, Director of the Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE) also accompanied the group on the visit. 

Iain Wright MP, Shadow Minister for Competitiveness & Enterprise at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills with responsibility for low carbon economy, manufacturing, construction sectors, and Gordon Banks, MP for Ochil and South Perthshire and Shadow Scotland Office Minister, showed their support for the capital investment programme which Superglass is progressing to transform the company’s production capabilities.

Industry urged to improve low carbon skills

On International Women’s Day, CITB is calling on construction professionals to follow the lead of 2013 Women in Construction Green Leadership Award winner Isabel McAllister, and gain the right skills to succeed in low carbon construction.

Ms McAllister, Sustainability Director at Mace, has herself taken advantage of CITB training and qualifications in the past, and underlines the role environmental efficiency has to play in construction.

MPA responds to Low Carbon Routemap

In response to the publication of the Green Construction Board’s 2050 Low Carbon Routemap, Dr Pal Chana, Executive Director of MPA Cement, said:

“The Green Construction Board’s routemap calls on individual sectors of the economy to come forward with their own plans to cut carbon by 2050. I am delighted to say that the UK cement industry has not only embraced this challenge but has led the way by publishing its 2050 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Strategy last month.  This is the first time any national cement body in the world has done this and we are proud to be setting the pace.”

Solid Wood Solutions and Fabric First events hailed a great success

The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham was the location for two recent major events in the construction calendar - Solid Wood Solutions and the Fabric First Event. Held over two days, the back-to-back conferences and exhibitions were truly an international affair with high profile speakers presenting inspirational case studies from across the globe.

Pioneering European manufacturers including; Wiehag, MM Holz, Mathis, Hess Timber and Wehmeyer, presented informative case studies at Solid Wood Solutions, showcasing iconic buildings and structures from around the world, including the Ice Mall in Eilat, the French Patents Office in Paris, the Anaklia Pedestrian Bridge in Georgia and the Inzell Speed Skating Stadium, Germany.
