Roofing skills on show at SkillBuild national final

Over the course of three days, young people from around the UK came together to demonstrate their capabilities at the national final of SkillBuild. The event formed part of the 2014 Skills Show held at the NEC in Birmingham on 13th – 15th November.

Decothane Ultra sets new standard for the roofing industry

The next generation of liquid applied roof membranes has been launched by Sika Liquid Plastics. Decothane Ultra is a low odour, non-disruptive roofing solution that achieves more than 80% reduction in odour strength five minutes after application and greater than 95% reduction after just one hour compared to a similar one-component competitor - results which were established by independent testing.

Not your average roofing job! Contract requires M1 closure

A Cornwall based roofing specialist is undertaking a very unusual contract this week, which will require the closure of one of the UK's busiest motorways.

JR Flat Roofing, based in Redruth, has secured a contract with a longstanding client, Moto Hospitality Ltd, the UK's biggest provider of motorway service areas.

Bracknell Roofing keeps it business as usuall for Invacare

Bracknell Roofing has completed a major refurbishment of the 800,000sq ft Invacare factory roof in Pencoed, South Wales, whilst the factory remained fully operational.

The flat roof on the building was over 20 years’ old and the single ply membrane had begun to deteriorate in places.

It was Bracknell Roofing’s specialist knowledge in flat roofs that enabled the team to advise the client on all the options available – repair or replace – that resulted in Invacare UK commissioned the company to carry out both the flat roof and ManSafe elements.

Roofing competitors head to SkillBuild final at NEC

The finalists for this year’s SkillBuild competition have been chosen and on 13th-15th November they will be competing to become a national champion in one of four major roofing disciplines. 

This year has seen a significant change to the proceedings and one that will throw a greater spotlight onto the national competition, as for the first time SkillBuild will be part of the Skills Show which is being held at the NEC in Birmingham. The competition is comprised of ten categories of which roofing, managed by National Federation of Roofing Contractors Ltd (NFRC) and in partnership with the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA), is one.

Institute of Roofing Launches Great Ambitions

The Institute of Roofing (IoR), the industry’s leading body for roofing qualifications and training, is looking forward to a positive year following its successful 33rd AGM held at the BRE’s Innovation Park in Watford recently. 

Gordon Penrose, IoR Hon. President commented; “I am so pleased with the support and turn-out at our AGM and I will now be taking an active committee role to help drive us forward. We represent professional recognition, qualifications and standards within the roofing industry, and 2014 will see us launch an ambitious campaign.”

NFRC launches dedicated roofing campaign for architects

The UK’s largest roofing trade association, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), has rolled out a roofing campaign exclusively for the architectural and specification sectors. Entitled ‘Think roofs – think NFRC’, the campaign aims to raise awareness of NFRC and to promote its knowledge and expertise to the architectural community.

Martin-Brooks paves way for Buxton concert venue

Sheffield-based roofing specialist, Martin-Brooks, is using the latest building techniques to help a key part of Buxton’s spa heritage hit the high notes with visitors.

Martin-Brooks has installed a new ‘upside down’ flat roof on The Pump Room in Buxton, enabling it to act as an open air stage for concerts and recitals held in the Derbyshire town.

Success for heritage at the Fringe, Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Fringe best is known for its comedy, theatre performances and avant-garde art shows, however it is also starting to be known amongst the heritage circuit for the Edinburgh Traditional Building Festival. 

On the 20th-22nd August, the second Traditional Building Festival took place at Edinburgh World Heritage Offices and was heralded to be, once again, highly successful and extremely well received by the public.
