Oak frame home designers and builders Welsh Oak Frame are pleased to hear the government’s Right to Build scheme has began rolling into action, with the Housing Minister Brandon Lewis announcing on 30th September that 11 areas across the country will benefit from the latest government-backed opportunity, to help would-be self-builders get their projects started.
These 11 chosen areas will each receive a share of £550,000 to then create and maintain a register of prospective self-builders in the area and locate possible sites for those listed. This will offer local people the right to design and build their own home.
The councils chosen to pilot the scheme are: Cherwell District Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Teignbridge District Council, Shropshire Council, Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, West Lindsey District Council, Exmoor and Dartmoor National Park Authorities, Pendle Borough Council, Sheffield City Council, South Norfolk District Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
General Manager at Welsh Oak Frame, Mark Jones says: “This is great news. It looks like the Government initiative announced in the 2014 budget is ‘putting its money where its mouth is’ on this scheme. While £550K is not a lot in the grand scale of the housing shortage crisis, we welcome this initiative with open arms, and look forward to other authorities following suit!”
