Worthing resident Mark Brook, last Friday received much needed maintenance to his home as part of Viridian Housing’s ‘Making a Difference’ volunteer project.
Running in various regions across the country, the project is all about Viridian employees and residents creating positive social impact to lives and homes in local communities.
Low-income earner, Mark Brook, is a single parent and sole carer for his seven year old son, Danny.
Project coordinator, DB Crawford, said with no available funds or time to tend to his home, Mark had been feeling very distressed about the deteriorating condition of his property.
“The walls were in desperate need of paint,” said DB. “We recognised that Mark was unable to carry out the work himself, and with a young son it was very important their home be a pleasant and safe environment.”
The Making a Difference project is a result of the increased focus on social impact at Viridian and the importance going the extra mile for their residents.
“When I told Mark his nomination for the project had been successful he couldn’t believe it,” said DB. “As a single male parent, he is constantly up against certain stereotypes. This project will have the biggest difference on his life.”
Mark said he was very impressed with the whole project.
“If it wasn’t for the Making a Difference project I would have never got this done,” said Mark. “Tools and paint are very expensive, so I was lucky that my home was chosen to take part. At the end of the day, the team even gave me the left over equipment so I can finish the work off myself.”
DB said it was great to see employees and young residents supporting those who were in need of help.
“This has also been an incredible opportunity for the volunteers,” she said. “We have all met fantastic new people, shared our experiences, had a laugh, and most importantly been a part of the residents’ lives. For me, this is beyond social impact. The Making a Difference project has truly become something amazing.”
