COMBISAFE FAST FRAME system strikes the right note

The COMBISAFE FAST FRAME System – a unique edge protection solution for steel frame structures - has been specified on the 220 million euro Paris Philharmonic Hall ensuring workers are protected during the erection of the steel frame.

In a design by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, the prestigious Philharmonie de Paris is a major new state-of-the-art music complex in the Parc de la Villette, which centres on a 2,400-seat concert hall, the largest built in the city for nearly a hundred years.

With the health and safety of the workers of the utmost importance in this city centre site, the COMBISAFE engineering team have been working with the client at the earliest stage of the construction process to ensure the most appropriate, safe and cost-effective protection system was used during the erection of the steel frame building.

Specialist steelwork Severfield Watson supplied more than 650 LM of the COMBISAFE FAST FRAME System that was attached to the distinctive aluminium clad roof.  A highly effective edge protection system, the system was developed by COMBISAFE in collaboration with Severfield Rowen for use on the Shard in London.

“The FAST FRAME System was the perfect safety solution during the construction of this iconic building, an invaluable and cost effective system which met our fall prevention and edge protection requirements,” commented Andy Luter, Project Manager, Severfield Watson.

Quick and easy to erect, the FAST FRAME System slots into pre-welded sockets on the perimeter beams to provide a triple guardrail, to which further protection in the form of a Debris Mesh Barrier can be attached. The innovative system enables the integration of temporary edge protection at ground level and, once fitted, is simply craned into place along with the steelwork. It also has the unique facility to raise and completely remove the barrier in-situ, allowing workers to work underneath the edge protection for access to the perimeter beams.

“This was the first time the FAST FRAME™ System was used outside of the UK,” commented Oliver Gwinnell from Combisafe.  “It was also the first time it was installed using the S-System Vari Clamp as well as the welded socket and sleeve.”

By providing the company’s innovative safety solutions to protect this landmark building during construction, COMBISAFE continues to set the standard in safety at height technology through early design consultation and the successful delivery of preventative and protective systems for the construction industry.
